Biden Bowl, Anyone? Italy's PM to Auction Off International Gifts for Charity

Passing on unneeded presents could be viewed as somewhat rude – except if it's done for a noble purpose.

A Philanthropic Clear-Out

The leader of Italy, Giorgia Meloni, will offload a reported 270 presents received by her by international figures during her travels. This unusual assortment could include gifts including a miniature chainsaw-holding statuette of Argentinian president Javier Milei and a pair of blue python skin shoes with gold heels.

The collection, combined, are valued at around €800,000. They will be auctioned off to the highest bidder by a Rome-based auction firm. A date is yet to be set, although the intention is to hold the auction before Christmas, with all funds raised going to various charities.

Palazzo Chigi Holdings

The items are currently stored in a repository on the upper level of Palazzo Chigi. It has been reported that Meloni furthermore planning to auction off gifts received by her preceding prime ministers that have been stored away for years.

The full gift list is yet to be disclosed, but some insight emerged earlier this year when an 11-page list of all declared gifts was submitted to lawmakers. The query centered on whether a rule restricting expensive presents was being followed. By law, a prime minister is not permitted to keep presents exceeding €300.

An International Assortment of Gifts

Notable gifts feature:

  • A silk accessory from the leader of Albania, reportedly presented to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
  • A sari from Kerala from India's prime minister.
  • A case of jewelry from the Slovakian president.
  • A porcelain tea set and six bottles of wine from Hungary's leader.
  • A ceramic bowl from the former US president.
  • A digital device from the leader of Ukraine.
  • Artworks from Moldova.
  • Additional objects including makeup, a skateboard, and several rugs from trips to Libya and other Arab nations.
"Perhaps the oddest gifts included the Milei figurine and the blue python skin shoes," observers have said.

Political Context

Supporters have applauded Meloni, mostly from within her party, with building relationships with global statesmen and re-establishing Italy as a significant player on the international platform once again.

This unique auction highlights a distinct method to handle the diplomatic artifacts that build up during a leader's tenure.
