‘Every minor detail – execute them’: The striker’s journey from rehabilitation to success with the Basque club

Whenhe debut appearance the Spanish forward competed in England, an teenage appearing for Athletic Bilbao B against German opponents at Adams Park in September 2015, he scored. During his subsequent match he played in England, against Sunderland weeks after, he scored. His third outing, against Manchester City six weeks after that, indeed, he scored again. When he returned to the northwest to play against the Red Devils at Leigh Sports Village in that year, he found the back of the net. A spectacular strike, as well. “In fact,” he says, “it’s one of the best goals in my career.” Therefore the team did what was necessary: they took him off.

“I got well angry,” the Athletic striker admits, then chuckling. “There must be a video somewhere. We traveled to face United and I was in fine form. They didn’t let me play the latter period: I hadn’t yet signed agreement, goals were flowing, there were lots of rumours, as you’d expect. I don’t know about interest from Newcastle, but I came across reports about Manchester United, the typical thing. It’s unclear how true it was, but supposing an offer came, I’d have chosen to stay at Bilbao. I feel lucky to be here.”

La Real relieve strain with extraordinary derby triumph

At Lezama, the city, the morning session is ready to commence; post-session, the short journey to the airport and another trip to England, now to take on the Magpies in the European elite competition on midweek. Uttering the name lights him up. It’s turning out to be a tough year for the club, due in part to the pressures of their participation. Beaten in added time in the weekend clash, they have secured just a single victory of their last eight matches and lost against Arsenal and Borussia Dortmund in the continental stage. However, look at the overall situation, the big nights he has lived and future challenges, and a sense of thankful reflection from him.

In the the period since he had rejoined the team, the striker has been a Europa League semi-finalist, stopped at the gates a final at home by the English giants, and has traveled on a traditional boat up the Nervión estuary accompanied by a huge crowd after winning the Copa del Rey, the team’s initial silverware in four decades. He’s now the top goal-getter in the European competition, where they are countercultural and returning after absence in ten years. “I couldn’t have pictured this,” he states.

He considered it hard enough just to make the first team and his assessment was correct. As the child of the former Real Sociedad player his father and a season ticket holder at the team he now opposes, Gorka is a product of Antiguoko, the local academy that developed the Arsenal manager, the legendary midfielder and the tactician. He signed for Athletic at seventeen but after making his senior debut in that summer, he went through a serious knee problem, the cut, a drop in category and a recall before he could truly get a chance, coming back aged 26 to live the best days of their lives.

Gorka Guruzeta in training
Gorka Guruzeta aims to take on Newcastle in the Champions League.

“You go into the academy doubting you’ll make the first team but with every stage you progress through you’re remaining and you can see it getting closer. You get there but … departure is necessary.” He had limited game time in half a dozen appearances between his debut and February 2019. “And then I go back down to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. Several appearances at that level and my knee gave way.

“It was a huge blow but In retrospect as a beneficial experience because it made me change the perspective. Recovering from a long-term injury is challenging, but it helps. You adopt practices previously lacking. Previously I was casual, but I attended practice and then head home, as a youngster does. In the facility, facilities are comprehensive, so do everything. Work, precaution. Get in the gym. With hip imbalance, work on that. With decent ankle function, make it a 12 or a 14. All those ‘silly things’: execute them.

“At the top level you’re going to face physical challenges who have crashed into players repeatedly. Highly robust. I look at photos of me before: I had slender legs. So what happens, happens. Current photos and the change is dramatic. The setback taught me. Sessions end, but further effort is needed. Everyone else is ready, really ready; you have to be too.”

Minutes are crucial. Guruzeta departed upset in the pandemic season, at 23 years old, dropping into the second division. With Sabadell in 2020-21, he scored three times in numerous matches. With Amorebieta in the latter part of the season, the scoring picked up. “It’s a common path: temporary moves, ended deals. With a turnaround, effort, faith, and should the time come the requirement appears where you play, recall is possible. Preparation is key. When the opportunity came, a fantasy realized. Lifting the cup, European football, and qualify for Europe’s top tier … pfff.”

Little surprise he states this is to be enjoyed. Particularly after the previous season which, at times, was about endurance. After being leading scorer with sixteen goals, he managed seven in {15 games more|additional matches|
