Israeli citizens commemorate second anniversary of October 7th attacks as Palestinian ceasefire talks continue
People have assembled around the country to mark the second anniversary since the Hamas-conducted attack on 7 October 2023, as discussions advanced in Egypt over a conclusion to the conflict in Gaza.
The attack saw more than 1,200 people killed and 251 others captured back to Gaza as hostages. It was the most most lethal day for Jews since the Second World War.
Israel responded by launching a military offensive in Gaza which has claimed over 67,000 people, as reported by the territory's Hamas-run health ministry. Its numbers are seen as reliable by the UN and other international bodies.
"The aggressive adversaries have hit us hard, but they have not broken us," the prime minister stated on that day.
He also promised to "realize all the aims of the war: the homecoming of all the kidnapped, the destruction of the Hamas regime and the assurance that Gaza will never again create a threat to Israel".
Memorial Gatherings Across Israel
The Israeli government postponed state commemorations until October 16th - after the conclusion of the religious holiday season - but ceremonies still took place across the country on that day.
A memorial ceremony for the relatives of Israeli citizens who died in the Hamas attack was organized in Tel Aviv. Arranged by the victims' relatives, it was aired across Israeli TV networks.
Some time earlier, a moment of silence was observed across the country.
Negotiation Meetings in Egypt
Meanwhile, the conflicting parties' delegations met in the North African Red Sea resort of the Egyptian city for a follow-up session of mediated discussions to review the conditions of the proposal.
A prominent representative familiar with the talks indicated that an night meeting of negotiations started at 7 PM local time.
The source said the day's discussions ended without tangible results, due to conflicting views over the recommended Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas demands to guarantee Israel does not restart fighting after the initial stage of the deal.
He commented that the negotiations are "tough and have not yet achieve any major advancement," but pointed out that facilitators are striving to close the differences between the two sides.
Essential Points in Negotiations
- An enduring ceasefire
- The trade of the prisoners still held by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
- The withdrawal of troops from Gaza
- Plans for humanitarian aid deliveries
- Future governance of the area
Civilian Feeling
In the city's Hostages Square that day, young a woman - whose sibling endured the incident on the Nova music festival, where 378 people were murdered and dozens more were taken hostage by Hamas fighters - told: "No location appears as home anymore and until all the hostages return none of us will feel safe."
"When we see everybody home returned, we can relax once more. Then we can begin to heal," she concluded.
Near the prime minister's home in the capital, people assembled to express their backing for the families of the hostages. Israel says 48 stay in captivity in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are considered to be alive.
Demonstrator one woman stated: "It's necessary do any agreement required for the hostages to be released. But we sincerely need promises that we will be safe."
Research now consistently show that approximately 70% of Israeli citizens desire the war to conclude in as payment for the liberation of the abducted.
Palestinian Conditions
At the area of the music event, those paying respects came together to pay their respects.
From the site, the boom of aerial bombardments and artillery could be heard just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where witnesses reported the intense Israeli attacks persisted.
In the urban center, bombardments were noted in the morning of Tuesday in the west side neighborhood, area and Nasr neighbourhoods and in the east side area of Sheikh Radwan, as well the camp to the north-west.
"When the night comes, the dread appears with it," relocated Gaza City resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose teenage son was died by an Israeli bombing earlier, shared.
"We are fearful of the attacks. All the night we are resting together, embracing, notably my youngest child who places his face on me all night."
"Continuously we check the updates to see the situation. And I'm concerned that this ceasefire will not be finalized and that the war will come back to us."
Medical Emergency
The healthcare center in Gaza City said it had received the remains of half dozen people by the daytime, including several killed in an Israeli bombing in the southern al-Sabra neighbourhood.
Nasser hospital in the southern city of that area said additional fatalities had been brought there. A person was lost his life by Israeli soldiers while seeking assistance to the south region, medics said.
