‘It sounds like witchcraft’: can light therapy really give you better skin, cleaner teeth, stronger joints?
Light therapy is certainly having a wave of attention. You can now buy glowing gadgets targeting issues like dermatological concerns and fine lines to aching tissues and gum disease, the latest being a dental hygiene device outfitted with miniature red light sources, described by its makers as “a breakthrough in personal mouth health.” Worldwide, the industry reached $1 billion in 2024 and is forecast to expand to $1.8 billion by 2035. There are even infrared saunas available, which use infrared light to warm the body directly, the thermal energy targets your tissues immediately. As claimed by enthusiasts, it feels similar to a full-body light therapy session, enhancing collagen production, easing muscle tension, alleviating inflammatory responses and chronic health conditions and potentially guarding against cognitive decline.
Research and Reservations
“It appears somewhat mystical,” observes a Durham University professor, who has researched light therapy for two decades. Naturally, certain impacts of light on human physiology are proven. Sunlight enables vitamin D production, crucial for strong bones, immune defense, and tissue repair. Light exposure controls our sleep-wake cycles, as well, stimulating neurotransmitter and hormone production during daytime, and winding down bodily functions for sleep as it fades into night. Artificial sun lamps are a common remedy for people with seasonal affective disorder (Sad) to elevate spirits during colder months. Clearly, light energy is essential for optimal functioning.
Various Phototherapy Approaches
Although mood lamps generally utilize blue-spectrum frequencies, most other light therapy devices deploy red or infrared light. In serious clinical research, such as Chazot’s investigations into the effects of infrared on brain cells, identifying the optimal wavelength is crucial. Light is a form of electromagnetic radiation, which runs the spectrum from the lowest-energy, longest wavelengths (radio waves) to the highest-energy (gamma waves). Light-based treatment uses wavelengths around the middle of this spectrum, the highest energy of those being invisible ultraviolet, then the visible spectrum we perceive as colors and then infrared (which we can see with night-vision goggles).
Ultraviolet treatment has been employed by skin specialists for decades to manage persistent skin disorders including eczema and psoriasis. It affects cellular immune responses, “and suppresses swelling,” says Dr Bernard Ho. “Substantial research supports light therapy.” UVA goes deeper into the skin than UVB, while the LEDs in consumer devices (usually producing colored light emissions) “typically have shallower penetration.”
Risk Assessment and Professional Supervision
The side-effects of UVB exposure, including sunburn or skin darkening, are recognized but medical equipment uses controlled narrow-band delivery – signifying focused frequency bands – that reduces potential hazards. “It’s supervised by a healthcare professional, so the dosage is monitored,” says Ho. And crucially, the light sources are adjusted by technical experts, “to confirm suitable light frequency output – unlike in tanning salons, where regulations may be lax, and emission spectra aren’t confirmed.”
Commercial Products and Research Limitations
Red and blue LEDs, he explains, “don’t have strong medical applications, though they might benefit some issues.” Red LEDs, it is proposed, improve circulatory function, oxygen absorption and dermal rejuvenation, and activate collagen formation – a key aspiration in anti-ageing effects. “Studies are available,” says Ho. “Although it’s not strong.” Regardless, given the plethora of available tools, “we’re uncertain whether commercial devices replicate research conditions. We don’t know the duration, how close the lights should be to the skin, if benefits outweigh potential risks. Numerous concerns persist.”
Targeted Uses and Expert Opinions
Initial blue-light devices addressed acne bacteria, microorganisms connected to breakouts. Research support isn’t sufficient for standard medical recommendation – even though, notes the dermatologist, “it’s commonly used in cosmetic clinics.” Individuals include it in their skincare practices, he says, however for consumer products, “we just tell them to try it carefully and to make sure it has been assessed for safety. Without proper medical classification, standards are somewhat unclear.”
Cutting-Edge Studies and Biological Processes
Simultaneously, in advanced research areas, researchers have been testing neural cells, discovering multiple mechanisms for infrared’s cellular benefits. “Virtually all experiments with specific wavelengths showed beneficial and safeguarding effects,” he states. The scientist mainly develops medications for neurological conditions, though twenty years earlier, a physician creating light-based cold sore therapy requested his biological knowledge. “He designed tools for biological testing,” he says. “I remained doubtful. The specific wavelength measured approximately 1070nm, that many assumed was biologically inert.”
Its beneficial characteristic, nevertheless, was that it travelled through water easily, meaning it could penetrate the body more deeply.
Mitochondrial Effects and Brain Health
Growing data suggested infrared influenced energy-producing organelles. These organelles generate cellular energy, producing fuel for biological processes. “Mitochondria exist throughout the body, including the brain,” says Chazot, who prioritized neurological investigations. “Studies demonstrate enhanced cerebral circulation with light treatment, which is always very good.”
With specific frequency application, energy organelles generate minimal reactive oxygen compounds. In limited quantities these molecules, explains the expert, “triggers guardian proteins that maintain organelle health, protect cellular integrity and manage defective proteins.”
All of these mechanisms appear promising for treating a brain disease: oxidative protection, inflammation reduction, and cellular cleanup – autophagy being the process the cell uses to clear unwanted damaging proteins.
