Munich Drone Incidents Add to the Continent’s Safety Concerns

Munich joins a growing number of EU aviation hubs affected by unmanned aircraft reports in the last month, including seventeen flight cancellations, 15 sent to other airports, and thousands of passengers facing delays to their trips overnight.

Multiple witnesses reported observing UAVs in the vicinity of the airfield, with a further report subsequently verified inside the no-fly area, obliging flight regulators to halt activities during inquiry.

It remains uncertain the number of, or of what type, drones were present.

The incident comes just before the last weekend of the Oktoberfest event, which had already seen problems a few days ago due to security concerns in the metropolis.

Deutsche Flugsicherung GmbH, the German aviation control body responsible for the country’s flight paths, said recently that drone sightings near aviation hubs are on the up, with 144 incidents up to now in the current year, compared with 113 the previous year, and 99 in the year before last.

Expect the reports and the associated disruption to spark the discussion about Europe’s sky protection, just after the EU leaders’ meeting in Copenhagen revealed certain disputes – mostly along regional divisions – about the newly proposed “unmanned aircraft defense” plan.

It’s October 3, 2025, a Friday, and this is the latest from Europe.
