Tuchel Questions Wembley Crowd Support Following Comfortable Win Over Wales.
The England head coach voiced his sadness that the England team did not enjoy greater backing from the home fans during their commanding 3-0 friendly victory on Thursday evening.
Tuchel was pleased to see his squad continue their winning momentum, with goals from Morgan Rogers, Ollie Watkins, and Saka inside the initial stages effectively ending the match. Yet, he was unhappy with the energy at the national stadium.
“With one and a half training days to get ready against a drilled team and we excelled,” Tuchel commented. “It could have been five goals ahead at the break. We missed the additional goals. The stadium was silent. There was no support from the stands. Our team gave their all to win.”
“What more can you give in 20 minutes? We prevented them escape. If you hear just the Welsh supporters for 30 minutes, it’s regrettable because the squad earned more support today.”
“I maintain this statement. There’s nothing more than leading three goals up in a derby. I hoped for a bit more support in phases where it gets difficult.”
“After halftime, to cheer us on, there was a bit too much support for Wales. It could have helped us to regain energy, but that’s football and so be it.”
Squad Decisions Justified by Performance
Away from potentially starting a fight with supporters, the manager also caused a stir by omitting Bellingham and Foden from his squad. However the decision was validated by Rogers excelling in the attacking midfield role and scoring his maiden goal for his country.
“He is what he is,” Tuchel noted. “He operates as an attacking midfielder and he is competing for his place.”
Wales Manager Seeks Lessons from Loss
Craig Bellamy hopes that Wales, who face a strong Belgian side in a crucial qualifying match on Monday, learn from their poor first-half display.
“This is why I wanted this friendly,” the manager commented. “I wanted to assess our current level. What are our ambitions? What is our identity? This performance fills me with inspiration.”
Fitness Worry for Watkins
Ollie Watkins was taken off at half-time after colliding with a goalpost and is a concern when the national team play their next opponents in Riga in a qualifier on next week.
