UN:Me: A Psychological Thriller Merging Survival Horror with Social Deduction Gameplay

The recent Day of the Devs digital showcase revealed several intriguing upcoming titles, but one in particular has captured the imagination: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo experience seems to blend the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill game with the paranoid deduction core of Among Us.

"This is a distinctive game where a girl harboring multiple human souls inside her must escape from a labyrinth of the psyche," explains developer Yasukazu Kawai.

Stepping Into a Shattered Consciousness

In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed female protagonist seeming to be of high school age. Within her reside four distinct souls, each with unique fears and motivations. These entities can seize control spontaneously, releasing their deep-seated terrors upon her without warning.

Judging by revealed footage, much of the action takes place within a eerie hospital, though other scenes depict the protagonist navigating a abandoned church.

An Environment of Individual Dread

"What are you fearful of? What causes you uneasy?" asks game director Shun Sasaki. "High places. Small rooms. Authority figures. Things that seem trivial to others can activate a deep instinct within us. This game delves into that idea — fears that are specific to each person."

The core mechanic involves controlling the persona that emerges at any given moment. However, these identities will change against your will as you play. During exploration, each soul's anxieties become exaggerated and assault the girl in succession. As the persona changes, so does the specific fear the player encounters.

Unsettling Aesthetics and a Fatal Choice

Initially, UN:Me shares striking aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill series. The hospital is filled with nurses who all share the same face, with unnervingly wide smiles. Figures in the waiting room have large blooms growing from their heads are. Floral motifs are an ever-present theme, juxtaposing natural beauty with unnatural horror.

Yet, UN:Me presents a singular mechanic. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four entities inhabiting the protagonist is the "true" one. "Each of the personas claims that the physical form belongs to them," explains a creator. "Throughout the game, you need to figure out who is real."

After a player have deduced a persona is an impostor, they are forced to destroy it. But, since every entity can lie or hide the truth, it is incredibly simple to make a mistake.

"Maybe you've already eliminated the true [soul] by your own actions," a voice suggests. "The final entity remaining could be a fraud. Either way, your choices are final."

UN:Me does not yet have a confirmed launch window, but it is can be wishlist on digital storefronts.
